Luftgekühlt Book Volume 3 chronicles four years of events, following the brand’s journey from Luft 7 in Indianapolis through the Port of Los Angeles and culminating with its largest gathering to date at Mare Island.

Working with Jeff Zwart, I helped design a photographic narrative that carries readers across the country while celebrating the cars, communities, and environments that define Luftgekühlt’s air-cooled culture.

Context

Following our work together on Volume 2, Jeff Zwart invited me to collaborate with him again on the design of the third Luftgekühlt Book.

Volume 3 needed to bring multiple years, locations, photographers, and perspectives together in one cohesive publication. More than a chronological event record, the book needed to capture how Luftgekühlt had grown while preserving the distinct atmosphere and character of each gathering.

The challenge was to give every location its own sense of place while maintaining a continuous visual story across the entire book.

Approach

Jeff Zwart and I developed an image-led editorial experience organized around the progression of the events. Photography, written reflections, and location-specific moments were sequenced to guide readers from Indianapolis to Los Angeles and, ultimately, Mare Island.

The design balances expansive photographic moments with carefully paced editorial content, allowing changes in architecture, landscape, scale, and community to shape the rhythm of the book. The publication was designed as a complete physical object, finished with a sleeve and stylized presentation box that extend the experience beyond its pages.

Outcome

The finished book feels unmistakably part of the Luftgekühlt collection, seamlessly integrating with the first two volumes through its shared sense of craftsmanship, restraint, and photographic storytelling. At the same time, the design introduces a refreshed visual language that gives Volume 3 its own identity and reflects the continued evolution of the brand.

Designed, produced, and printed with the utmost detail the limited-edition publication transforms four years of events into a premium collectible and an enduring record of Luftgekühlt’s growing air-cooled community.
